Americans as International Travelers:

Fostering Understanding through Community Service

Nearly 1 in 10 Americans who travel internationally for pleasure—more than four million persons—express strong interest in taking an international vacation in which they volunteer for community service. This presentation draws on Menlo Consulting Group’s TravelStyles® survey of American international pleasure travelers to explore the attitudes, interests, and characteristics of these travelers.

More broadly, the presentation examines Americans’ penchant for societally conscious tourism generally. For instance, how much emphasis do American international pleasure travelers place on cultural understanding? What are their attitudes regarding sustainable tourism? How interested are they in ecotourism?
