Background

Peace Through Interfaith Dialogue

In October 1986, the United Nations International Year of Peace, Pope John Paul II brought together some 90 religious leaders of diverse faiths in recognition of the vital role of all the worldís religions in promoting a spirit of mutual understanding and tolerance as prerequisites to a peaceful world. They came together in Assisi, Italy, where centuries earlier, St. Francis of Assisi walked gently on the earth promoting values of love, the simple life, a respect for nature and all of God's creation.

Commemoration

The Spirituality in Tourism Conference will be a commemoration of this event and an exploration of the spiritual dimensions of travel and the travel industry. It will embrace the same values personified by the life of St. Francis.

1986 also happens to be the year the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT) was founded with the aim of focusing on the enormous potential of travel and tourism as a force for peace and sustainable development - the potential of the worldís largest industry to be "the World's First Global Peace Industry". IIPT has convened four global conferences, most recently, a "Global Summit on Peace through Tourism" in Amman, Jordan, November 2000. The IIPT Spirituality in Tourism Network is one of several groups to emerge from the success of IIPT conferences.

Conference Goals

Spirituality Connection is the thread that binds all religious traditions and belief systems. It is considered the first marker of civilization in the earliest archeological records of humankind. We believe it is at the core of the advancement of humankind. The conference aim is to explore how aspects of tourism, and the tourism industry, can manifest spirituality in the 21st century as people of good will everywhere work towards "Building a Culture of Peace".

The core program will comprise an interactive dialogue of working groups with a view to identifying positive steps to be taken individually and collectively in developing an awareness, and appreciation of the spiritual dimensions of travel and the facilitating role of the travel and tourism industry.
