Munzali Dantata, Director General, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism
The Contribution of Argungu Fishing and Cultural Festival to Poverty Reduction
Argungu Fishing and Cultural Festival is reputed to be the most popular cultural event in Nigeria . Though supported by government, it has failed to improve the lot of the villagers who converge once a year in a traditional fishing competition in which the winner, who has the biggest catch, is crowned champion and receives valuable prizes. The project seeks to empower the villagers to start fish farms instead of relying on artisinal farming, and fishing all year round, and of relying on one big cultural festival which though popular, but not creating sustainable business for the community.

Munzali Dantata, 49 years, a lawyer by training with a Masters Degree in International Finance Law, began his working career in the legal field but soon moved to the tourism industry where he has been active in both the private and public sectors over the last 20 years. He later diversified to tour operation, promoting inbound travel. In the public sector, his first appointment was Board Member of the Nigerian Tourism Board (NTB) in 1991, which became the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). In the year 2000 he was appointed Board Member of two committees of the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE); the BPE Committee on Tourism, and the BPE Committee on Aviation He was appointed member of the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT) from 2003 to 2006 chaired by the President of Nigeria. Finally, in 2006, he was appointed Director General (CEO) of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR). Mr Dantata has also been active in private sector associations such as the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents (NANTA) where he was elected president in 1992, the Federation of West and Central African Travel and Tourism Associations (FISAVET) where he was elected Vice President in 1999, and finally the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) where he was elected president in 2003. Mr Dantata has authored several books and articles on tourism including “ Abuja: A Business Travel Guide” in 1993, and “Introduction to Tourism in Nigerian” 2006. With his interest in community based rural tourism He is also owner of a cultural village resort outside Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.
