Outcomes of the IV African Conference - Kampala, Uganda May 2007

The International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT), UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), World Bank, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and Africa Travel Association, are proud to announce that we achieved a very successful conference.

More than 400 persons from 33 countries took part in the Conference sharing their ideas, wisdom and commitment to “Building Strategic Alliances for Sustainable Tourism Development, Peace, and Reconciliation on the African Continent.”

We are most gratified by the significant outcomes from the 4 th IIPT African Conference which include the following:

  • His Excellency President Museveni Proclamation of May 20 to May 26 as “National Peace through Tourism Week”
  • Uganda to be first nation in the world to introduce Tourism Legislation in support of the U.N. MDG;
  • Launch of Uganda Martyr's Trail as legacy of the Conference;
  • Dedication of IIPT International Peace Park at Martyr's Trail;
  • Four Sister Cities announced: Macon, Georgia and Jinga, Uganda; Saint GAbriel, Louisiana and Entebbe, Uganda; Savannah, Georgia and Mukono, Uganda; East Over, South Caronlina and Kira Town, Uganda;
  • Africa Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) to be launched in Uganda ;
  • Mira Berman, recently retired Executive Director of Africa Travel Association, recipient of first IIPT Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Launch of Graduate Level Peace through Tourism Program at WICE (World Leisure Center of Excellence) Wageningen University in partnership with IIPT;
  • Partnering of Makerere University with leading universities in Australia ;
  • IIPT Scholarship Award announced to Inter-disciplinary team of students writing the best paper on “Tourism Contribution to the UN Millennium Development Goals.”
  • Student/Youth Leaders Africa Diaspora Heritage Trail Proposal;






  • First Africa Media Exchange with participating journalists, editors and publishers from Africa, Europe and North America committed to enhancing the international image of Africa . Media Exchange with goal of enhancing the international image of Africa ;
  • Successful Training Workshops: Hotel Owners, Destination Marketing, Community Tourism, Africa Diaspora Heritage Trail; a Guiding Workshop will be held in June;
  • Successful Ministers Roundtables: Healing the Wounds of Conflict through Tourism, Culture and Sport, Enhancing the Contribution of Tourism to Poverty Reduction and the UN Millennium Development Goals; and African Diaspora Heritage Trail.
