Aim

Identify, encourage and develop tourism initiatives that will contribute to sustainable human, social, cultural and economic development in the 21st Century. Particular emphasis will be placed on building two-way bridges among developed, developing and emerging economies of the world.

Objectives

Presentation and discussion of 150 ‘real life’ case studies of "Success Stories" from regions throughout the world.

  1. Conceive specific projects and programs for launching in the Year 2000.
  2. Create a "21st Century Agenda for Peace through Tourism".
  3. Provide a forum for leading thinkers and doers including researchers, educators, policy makers and practitioners interested in the vision of tourism as a global peace industry.
  4. Harness the occasion of the Conference to contribute to the sustainable tourism aims of Glasgow, Scotland and the U.K. in the global context.
Topic Areas

Human, social, cultural, economic, spiritual and educational development as well as heritage preservation, environmental protection, bio-diversity, rural and community development, Indigenous programs, opportunities for the disabled and others.

Conference Programme & Keynote Speakers

The Programme will include 15 to 18 internationally prominent keynote speakers from different regions of the world and representing a range of perspectives will be featured in plenary sessions including: two Nobel peace prize winners; Francesco Frangialli, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization; Dr. Mohammed El Ashry, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Environment Facility; Cora Weiss, President of the Hague Appeal for Peace; Hon. George Payne, Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization; Jeremy Harris, Chair of the Mayors' Asia-Pacific Environmental Summit; and the President of the Africa Travel Association. Concurrent sessions will feature 150 case studies of "Success Stories", "Best Practice", and workshops for further development of projects and programmes.
