The Cyprus Opportunity: Tourism, Culture and Sport – Pathway to Reconciliation and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.”

The aim of the Conference is to develop initiatives that harness tourism, culture and sport in promoting bi-communal understanding and collaboration towards sustainable cultural and socio-economic development.

The three Preparatory Workshops will each be held in the Green Zone as follows:

  Monday, 6 April                09:30 to 16:00

Workshop Objectives
Cyprus 1The objectives of the workshops are to identify collaborative initiatives in the areas of tourism, culture/the arts, sport, environment, and sustainable economic development that can contribute to enhanced mutual understanding, trust, and collaboration among the Greek and Turkish communities of Cyprus; and secondly, to explore the development of innovative tourism products related to heritage, culture, the arts, ecotourism, agro-tourism, sport tourism and other special niche markets that embrace collaborative community involvement. The Workshops will seek to build on the successes of current projects and programs and propose goals and concrete outcomes for the May conference.Cyprus 4

The Workshop objectives will be framed within a context that recognizes the potential of Cyprus as the natural bridge of 3 continents and a cross-roads of civilizations where East meets West; an island rich in history that can be traced back more than 9,000 years - where one can explore treasures of the Ancient Greeks and the Roman period, churches and monasteries from Byzantine times, castles and palaces from the days of the Crusaders, city walls from Venetian days, and mosques, libraries, and inns from the Ottoman era. The cultural and natural assets of Cyprus  including idyllic villages, beautiful beaches, rugged coast lines rolling hills and forested mountains will also inform deliberations of Workshop participants – together with the unmatched hospitality, friendliness,Cyprus - Girl and welcoming spirit of all Cypriots.

Background
In the year 2000, an IIPT Conference was held in Gocek, Turkey, between Turkish and Greek travel and tourism industry leaders. The Greek tourism industry responded by hosting an IIPT Conference the following year in Thessalonki, Greece, with participants from Greece and Turkey, as well as Cyprus. This second Conference resulted in the “Thessaloniki Declaration” which concluded with the following recommendation:

…. that we strive to make Cyprus a model of peace and friendship through Tourism for the Mediterranean Region and throughout the world in the spirit of the original Olympic Games.

Cyprus Kids in World Harmony Run

With high level talks currently underway between the Greek and Turkish Communities, it is now timely to move forward with this recommendation in a manner that gains international recognition for Cyprus as a model for the UN International Year of Reconciliation 2009.

The Workshops and Conference are endorsed by both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot Communities.

IIPT - IRAN Persian Journey 2009 Tours

IIPT Launches World Peace Tours to Iran:
Building Bridges of Culture and Understanding

The International Institute of Peace through Tourism (IIPT) is taking bold steps to build bridges of culture and mutual understanding between the peoples of Iran and the United States by offering Americans opportunities to visit this ancient civilization and learn first-hand about its nine thousand year history, rich culture, and welcoming spirit of its people.

Louis D'AmoreIn announcing the tours, IIPT Founder and President, Louis D’Amore stated, “IIPT is most proud to launch its Iran Tours following on President Obama’s historic Nowruz (Iranian New Year) message this past Friday to the people and leaders of Iran – a message of ‘new beginnings’ with an emphasis on diplomacy, renewed exchanges, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce,  grounded in a new era mutual respect, with a recognition of Iran’s true greatness as a civilization  – a message reminding us of the common humanity that binds us together.”

The Iran tours have been crafted to reinforce IIPT’s dedication to “making Travel and Tourism the world’s first Global Peace Industry” and the belief “that every traveler is potentially an ‘Ambassador for Peace.’ The tours will exemplify IIPT’s ideals and values as expressed in the ‘IIPT Credo of the Peaceful Traveler.’

Two 10-day tours will depart in Fall 2009 hosted by the IIPT’s World Peace Travel program as part of its continuing efforts in “promoting a culture of peace through tourism”.  IIPT believes visitors to Iran will find the country rich in history, vibrant in culture, and warm in hospitality with Iranians eager to meet and welcome them to Iran.

Donald KingDonald King, IIPT Ambassador at Large, has led several previous trips to Iran and firmly believes, “There is no warmer welcome for Americans anywhere than in Iran. With the Obama administration’s emphasis of increasing diplomacy, IIPT’s tours to Iran make it possible for ordinary Americans to lead the way one tour at a time.

Both tours have identical itineraries and will take in the splendor of Iran’s ancient and modern civilization showcased at its three main cities: Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan.  The tours will visit the treasure trove of museums in Tehran, magnificent ruins of Persepolis and grandeurs of the old city of Isfahan.  The spectacular sightseeing will also be complimented by off the beaten track excursions such as an evening visiting nomads, sipping tea along the bridges overlooking the scenic Zayandeh River or exploring the myriad of bustling bazaars.

IIPT - Peace Through Commerce Conference

IIPT Proud Co-Sponsor of Peace through Commerce eConference

Welcome Message from Professor Tim Fort

Tim FortThe World Bank Institute and the Institute for Corporate Responsibility are pleased to announce the launch of the Peace Through Commerce eConference this Monday, 23 March. We are delighted that so many of you have registered - nearly 500 already - and encourage new participants to join by clicking here.

Dr. Tim Fort
Executive Director, GW's Institute for Corporate Responsibility

At a conference in November 2008 hosted by ICR in conjunction with a series of co-sponsors listed on the home page, we captured most of the presentations via film. Clips of those presentations, longer presentations, and/or written papers are presented in this WBI-ICR electronic conference as way to broaden and to deepen the scope of the conversation on these topics.

Each week a moderator will be at hand helping to move conversation along and to keep us relatively on point, although tangents sometimes also provide some of the more interesting dialogue. They will be joined by those who presented in November and whose videos or papers appear for the week (click here for a full list of moderators and presenters). You are welcome to pose questions to the presenters, but please bear in mind that a presenter may be online 24/7 or just a couple of times a week. So it will help the conversation to raise questions or make comments pertiment to the entire audience rather than to the one presenter.

A representative from the WBI / ICR eConference team will announce the start of each week and introduce the moderator and presenters. We may also have some special announcement to make to highlight a related issue or event. There are a few of those related events that will occur during the nine weeks of our program.

The first three weeks of the program are more practioner-based whereas the last six weeks dive into more academic research. The first week of the program will be moderated by Cindy Schipani, an early pioneer in this field and a professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. Participants for the week include Steve Killelea, Walter Robb, and John Sullivan. Roger Dow's video will also be presented.

For more information on how to get the most out of the eConference, download the "eConference Guidance and Tips"Tim Fort. This tells you how to register, update your profile, and participate in the eConference. In particular, be sure to add a picture and some personal / professional information in your individual profile, as the profile is the unique tool to help "put a face" members of the community, and to each contribution. If you have any questions, please contact the event team at info@peace.businessfightspoverty.org

I hope you find these weeks, as well as all of the nine weeks, stimulating and meaningful. Welcome aboard!
